Know What to Do if You Put Gasoline in Your Diesel Tank

Harold Lawson

Many people choose to drive trucks with diesel engines because they are often viewed as being more powerful and efficient than regular engines. If you're not careful, you might get distracted while you are at the pump and accidentally put regular gasoline in the tank rather than the diesel fuel that it is supposed to have. This can cause your engine to seize up and could ruin it altogether. If you have put regular fuel in your diesel tank, use the following guide to learn what steps to take next.

Do Not Start Your Engine

The last thing you want to do is start your engine. If you start your engine, the fuel will start to travel through your car, and could cause it to seize within minutes. Instead, put your truck into neutral and push it from the pump to an empty parking spot nearby.

Have the Truck Towed

You should not drive the truck anywhere. Contact a mechanic who you trust to work on your truck and have him or her send the tow truck from their shop or ask if there is a towing company that they work with on a regular basis. This can often save you money on the overall cost of the tow.

Explain the Situation

The mechanic will need to know how much fuel you put into the truck when you were pumping and how much diesel was in the tank before you started to add the gasoline. This will ensure that the mechanic knows how much fuel to expect to come out of the tank when he or she drains it.

Wait Patiently

Next, the mechanic will need to find the drain valve on your truck's fuel tank and remove it to allow the fuel to drain from your vehicle. The fuel will need to be disposed of properly because it will not be useable in any other vehicle. It will take a few minutes for the vehicle to drain. Once the tank is empty, the mechanic will inspect the vehicle to see if he or she needs to flush the engine, as well. If the fuel got into the engine, flushing it will ensure that no more damage is caused.

Everyone makes mistakes now and then, but driving a vehicle that is filled with the wrong type of fuel will end up ruining your vehicle. Luckily, within a matter of just a few short hours, a mechanic can fix the situation for you so that you can get back on the road as soon as possible.
